Counted as Righteous (or, what God doesn’t say about being righteous)

{Romans 4-22-25}

This week I’ve been reflecting on what God says and what God doesn’t say about being righteous before Him.

Notice what he says:

“Abraham believed God and it was counted to Him as righteousness.” {4:3}

and

“The words ‘it was counted to him’ were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also.” {4-23}

Notice what Romans doesn’t say:

If you don’t dance, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you don’t drink, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you wear a cross necklace, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you go to a certain church, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you don’t have a tatoo, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you don’t have multiple piercings, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you homeschool, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you do or don’t send your kids to public school, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you live in poverty, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you give generously, it will be counted to you as righteousness.

If you dress like a Christian, talk like a Christian, act like a Christian, and appear to be as good and right and righteous as possible, than it will be counted to you as righteousness.

I could go on and on and on. No, Romans doesn’t say these things, thankfully. I’m not sure why it’s taken over 20 years for me to embrace what God does say, except that God is continuing to ruin me each day and remind me of what it truly means to be righteous in Him, not in myself.

No. God addresses our hearts and our inner beliefs before he ever addresses our outward actions. He goes to the core. Instead, God says:

“It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.”

Amen!
